Higher Learning

Regularly over the past three years, I’ve worked with mStoner, a higher education and non-profit interactive studio, as a visual designer for many projects. We have a great partnering work relationship and we’ve produced many a successful project — some award-winning — in the higher education realm. Some of these are solutions for Ball State University, Kellogg School of Management, William & Mary, Boston College and quite a few more.
I’ve been pushing the idea that they ought to come and make their work known to those outside the higher education arena as the work is good and the challenges difficult and precise. Colleges and universities have much more stringent guidelines and goals which often incorporate marketing, multiple types and levels of navigation for different audiences, very content-rich and text-heavy websites and complex problems that require sophisticated solutions. mStoner is very good at this and I’ve enjoyed producing visual designs for over 25 projects over those three years.
And so, after much pushing and this time, pre-planning, I’ve spoken with Design Director Douglas Gapinski, Creative Director Patrick DiMichele and rising designer Laurel Hechanova (watch for her in the years to come) to present at SXSW 2010 a presentation called Lessons Learned from Higher Education Design.
While we’re focusing on design for higher education, we’ll also look at what we’ve learned by designing for higher education and how it affects design for other types of websites and organizations.
Take a look at the brief, the questions we’ll be answering and hopefully you’ll vote, early and often.
