Weightshift Presents: Interaction Jones & The Template of Doom

We came away from SXSW this year feeling energized by various speakers, presentations and the general atmosphere as always. We also came away vowing to pitch a presentation that would be interesting and relevant to our times — nothing with the word “social” in it. But relevant to the craftsmanship of design, development, content and ideation. And so we have.

A little late. In fact, into the next week. The reason: South By Southwest, of course. Andrew, Scott and I all returned last week, staggered in our departure. I left a day early, Andrew the day after that and Scott the day after Andrew. The weekend has passed and we reconvened today for this week.

What I thought was going to be a quiet week actually turned out to be quite the opposite. We worked harder, longer and more productively than I thought. That shouldn’t really be surprising anymore. A good chunk was dedicated to SitBy.Us as we head into the week that ends with the kick-off of South By Southwest and the other was on Friday, when I had the chance to play Layer Tennis again.

This Recently is a bit late but in some ways, timely.

It’s all heads down here, as we arrive at the end of February, the shortest month of the year. February somehow always goes by in a flash and I never understand why or how this is so, despite being only two days shorter than any other month. An illusion of time.

The biggest thing that happened outwardly this week? We opened up the shop for business.

Introducing SitBy.Us

If you’ve ever been to SXSW Interactive, you know that it can be difficult to find where your friends are sitting in a panel, particularly in the massive auditoriums and the notorious 18BCD. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to let your friends know where you’re sitting — or find out where they are — in an easy-to-use app?

Maybe busy is the norm these days but that’s a good thing. So I won’t talk about it, though I suppose I already have.

Fever Pitch
South by Southwest is coming up fast. With the ever increasing popularity of Twitter, it seems easier to gauge the pulse of those in your internet circle. A lot of first-timers seem to be attending this year which I take as a good sign. Alongside the super-packed and stacked schedule, this year’s SXSWi should be a good one. I’m excited to see friends I don’t get to see too often and who live on the other coast or in-between and the friends I’ve gotten to know online but haven’t yet met.

Higher Learning

Regularly over the past three years, I’ve worked with mStoner, a higher education and non-profit interactive studio, as a visual designer for many projects. We have a great partnering work relationship and we’ve produced many a successful project — some award-winning — in the higher education realm. Some of these are solutions for Ball State University, Kellogg School of Management, William & Mary, Boston College and quite a few more.

SXSWi 2009 Photos

Belated but it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks since Austin. Below are a few selections from the photos I took while at this year’s South by Southwest Interactive.

New Branding: Sneak Peek

A sneak peek at the new branding materials, which I originally posted on Flickr yesterday. Stickers are on their way, and I’m working on the desktop wallpaper versions (will be released with the iPhone versions). Skateboards are also in the works. I do miss skating occasionally.

If you’re at SXSW Interactive and see me, come and get some pins, stickers and cards.

SXSWi 2008: Design is in the Details

In 2008, I gave a presentation for South by Southwest Interactive entitled, Design is in the Details. It was a wonderful event, where they gave me the “big room” aka 18ABCD, which was far too kind. Thanks to those who attended.
